염증, 탈수질(수초 탈락), 퇴행변성 등이 시(각)신경에 생길 때 시신경염이 생길 수 있다.
안구 내 유두염증이 있고 그 유두가 부을 수 있는 안구 내 시신경염이 생길 수 있다.
시신경 유두는 정상적이고 안구 후부에 있는 시신경에 염증이 생길 수 있는 안구 후부 유두염도 있다.
시신경 유두에만 염증이 있는 시신경염을 시시경 유두염(Papillits)이라고 한다.
때로는 유두에도 염증이 있고 망막에도 염증이 있을 수 있다.
이런 시신경염을 시(각)신경 망막염증이라고 한다.

시신경염의 원인

유행성 이하선염, 홍역, 수두 등 바이러스 감염, 뇌수막구균성 뇌막염 등 박테리아 감염 또는 바이러스 뇌막염 또는 뇌염, 전신적 루프스, 파종상 경화증, 외부 독물, 약물중독, 납중독 등으로 시신경염이 생길 수 있다.

시신경염의 증상 징후

원인에 따라 다르다.
시력기능이 약해지거나 소실될 수 있다.
급성 시력상실이 점진적으로 생길 수 있다.
일 측성이거나 양 측성이다.
안구를 움직일 때 안구에 통증이 생길 수 있고 안구를 살짝 누르면 아플 수 있다.
경미한 시신경염의 증상이 시작한 후 1~4주 내에 점진적으로 회복되는 경우가 많다.
완전히 시력을 상실할 수 있다.

시신경염의 진단과 치료

증상 징후, 병력, 검진 등으로 진단할 수 있다.
검안경으로 눈 안저를 들여다보면 시신경 유두(Optic disc)에 염증이 있는 것을 볼 수 있다.
유두가 부어있고 출혈반점이 발견될 수도 있다.
치료는 원인에 따라 한다.

• Optic neuritis can occur when inflammation, demyelination (myelination), and degeneration occur in the optic nerve.

• You may have an inflammation of the papilla in the eye and optic neuritis in the eye where the nipple may swell.

• The optic disc is normal, and there is also posterior papillitis, which can cause inflammation of the optic nerve at the back of the eye.

• Optic neuritis in which only the optic disc is inflamed is called papillitis.

• Sometimes the nipples are inflamed and the retina can also be inflamed.

• This type of optic neuritis is called optic (angle) nerve retinitis.

Causes of optic neuritis

• Optic neuritis can be caused by viral infections such as mumps, measles and chickenpox, bacterial infections such as meningococcal meningitis, viral meningitis or encephalitis, systemic lupus, disseminated sclerosis, external poisons, drug poisoning, lead poisoning, etc.

Symptoms, signs of optic neuritis

• Depends on the cause.

• Vision may be weakened or lost.

• Acute blindness may occur gradually.

• It is unilateral or bilateral.

• When you move the eyeball, it can cause pain in the eyeball and it can hurt when you lightly press the eyeball.

• Mild optic neuritis symptoms often begin to gradually recover within 1 to 4 weeks.

• You can lose your sight completely.

Diagnosis and treatment of optic neuritis

• It can be diagnosed by symptoms, medical history, and examination.

• If you look at the fundus of the eye with an ophthalmoscope, you can see that the optic disc is inflamed.

• Swollen nipples and bleeding spots may be found.

• Treatment depends on the cause.
